I. College Access Initiativies and Programs
A. Gear Up (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.)
Improves college readiness for high school graduates; 11 existing college access programs in the state (see
Ohio College Access Network Map)
Incorporates algebra concepts into middle/junior high, inquiry-based, hands-on learning in math and science; aligns writing assessment and instruction with college preparatory expectations; provides Tech Prep Information Technology options and early math placement tests to high school students (PSAT in 10th grade); uses 21st Century Scholar Portfolio; provides information about required and recommended college preparatory course work; provides mentoring using volunteers and electronics, academic and cultural field trips and college visits, college and career advising; after school homework roundtable; there is an academic preparation coordinator; use of distance learning, and so on.
1/4 the traditional entering freshmen at Ohio's public colleges and universities require at least one remedial course; of the 70% who graduate high school in Ohio, ohio 55% continue on to college (1996); only 39% of Ohioans, who graduate from high school complete any college education (1999)
The partners are The Cleveland Scholoarship Programs, Inc., in collaboration with one middle school, two high schools, and various colleges and businesses in the Cleveland area, and The Ohio University, Southern Campus in Ironton, OH., linked with Ironton City Schools and the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education, and various community members.
Other key partners are the Office of the Governer, The Ohio Department of Education, and the Neighborhood Centers Association.
B. STARS (Students Achievement in Research and Scholarhip)
Sponsored by Ohio Board of Regents
Goals are to introduce students to research - oriented experiences to facilitate their awareness of linkage between research, graduate school, and academic careers- goal is to prepare undergraduates at Cleveland State for Graduate school.
C. OACHE (Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education)
This is a consortium of ten public colleges and universities in the 29 counties of Appalachian Ohio
Goal is to increase level of educational attainment of the residents of this region

II. Partner Programs
A. CAPE (Camp Attracting Prospective Educators)
Summer program designed for 11th graders interested in enrolling in colleges of education upon high school graduation; provides academis enrichment and life skills / job training
B. Tech Prep (Partnering institutions of higher education, high schools, and businesses) ~ See Separate Category III
C. LEAF (Lake / Geauga Educational Assistance Foundation)
Provides one - to - one information programs, ongoing financial aid counseling and workshops, college resource and scholarship directory, test preparation assistance, motivational talks, campus trips, and scholarships.

The map contains state locations for OCAN members, Ohio TRIO programs, and UPWARD BOUND.
Goal is to help as many Ohio students as possible pursue post - secondary education by helping to create new access programs and providing continuing assistance to programs already operation throughout the state. Programs include: Financial Aid Counseling, Last Dollar Scholarships, College Resource Centers, Parental Advising, Early Awareness Activities, College Applications Advising, Mentors, Peer Tutors, Community Workshops, Services to College Students, and Adult Learning Advising.
E. TRIO
Programs sponsored are: Educatonal Opportunity Centers, Ronald E. McNair Post baccalaureate Achievement, Student Support Services, Talent Search, TRIO Dissemination Partnership Program, Training Program for Federal TRIO Programs Staff; Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math and Science.
Programs are educational outreach designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds; programs are targeted to assist low-income, first generation college, and disabled students to progress through the academic system from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. Programs also include training for directors and staff of TRIO projects. Grants are also available.
1/3 of two-year college students not ready for first-year writing courses.
27% of 63,000 recent high school graduates from Ohio high schools, that is 17,000 students, were enrolled in at least one developmental course(1995)

EECAP program assisted high school juniors. Now with the State of Ohio's change in writing assessment, a 10th grade writing assessment, next year, 2003, EECAP will fund projects working with high school freshman.
IV. Tech Prep Programs
There are 27 Tech Prep programs in the state of Ohio, servicing all counties. (See list of the Tech Prep Programs in the Appendix.
Programs emcompass Business (various types, such as automotive), Engineering, Health, Information, and Horticulture Technology.
There are Tech Prep Summer Academies held at various locations (See Handout listing summer programs and contact information). The academies are designed for individuals preparing to teach students in Tech Prep. The Ohio Board of Regents, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, Offers the College Tech Prep Academy, designed to prepare people to teach Tech Prep.
